HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed’s Sha’Red wins Group 3 Al Ruwais
The French trainer-jockey pair of Eric Lemartinel and Gerard Avranche struck with Ain Jaloot in the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival’s Wathba Stud Farm Cup on Sunday evening, February 1, 2015.
Earlier in the feature event of the 9-race meeting at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club racecourse, Sha’Red owned by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs won the Group 3 Al Ruwais, a 1000-metre sprint for Purebred Arabians.
In the Wathba Stud Farm Cup race, Lemartinel provided both first and second in the 1000-metre handicap. Avranche had Ain Jaloot leading close home to deny stablemate AF Asefah under Osin Murphy. Ar Bint Al Arab under apprentice jockey George Buckell finished third in the 12-horse race which carried a prize fund of Dh 70,000.
The feature race on Sunday’s marathon nine-race card was the 1000m Group 3 Al Ruwais and, for the fifth year running, HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the winning owner.
Twelve months ago the owner witnessed his pair of Rakha and Sha’Red dead-heat in a thrilling finish but this year it was a lot easier for the latter, who collared the same owner’s Areem 100m out to win comfortably.
The mount of Richard Mullen, Sha’Red, trained by Yousef Al Bloushi, was well out of his ground at halfway but finished with great purpose to win easily in the end.
“These are the kind of spare rides we really like,” said Mullen. “His form was there for everyone to see and the trainer was very bullish before the race.
“They went very quick, as you would expect and we were out of our ground early on but, once we hit the straight, he picked up very well and did it nicely in the end.
“To get past a class horse like Areem he must be a good horse.”
